Transport
The most convenient way to get to/from the airport to the Curacao Marriott Beach Resort on Piscadera Bay is by taxi, which should take around 15 minutes and should cost around $25 USD for 4 people+luggage. There is a $39 USD departure tax (which may or may not be included in your ticket, see
this). Taxis, which hang around hotels, are also convenient ways to get around the island and may also be ordered from central dispatch at 599-9-869-0747.
Activities
- Diving and snorkeling is popular in Curacao due to the 98ft (30m) visibility and the warm water, and the hotel has an onsite dive and water sports center.
- The west coast of Curacao north of Willemstad has many beautiful white-sand beaches like Kleine St. Michiel, Kas About, Playa Lagun, Playa Knip and Playa Kalki.
- For wind and wave surfing, head to Playa Canoa on the east coast of the island, about 8 miles from Willemstad.
- Christoffel National Park offers hiking trails over prickly cacti, divi-divi trees, bushy-haired palms and exotic flowers.
Sights
The hotel is located about 7km from the biggest city on the island,
Willemstad, which is worth exploring for its colonial Dutch heritage, markets, museums, colorful houses, and cafes. Curacao's diverse populations mixes Latin, European and African ancestries. A city tour may be worthwhile and can be arranged by the hotel. Else,
- Visit the area called Punda in Willemstad to see the markets, the Jewish Cultural-Historical and sit by the wall along the Sint Annabaai channel to watch the Queen Emma Bridge swing open to let huge ships pass.
- Visit the recommended Museum Kura Hulanda, located inside 19th century slave quarters, to view the brutal history of slavery in the Caribbean.
- Visit the Floating Market (6:30am is best, but it continues all day) to see dozens of Venzuelan schooners laden with tropical fruits and vegetables, fish and spices arrive in the Punda side of the city.
Money
United States Dollars (USD) are accepted for almost everything in Curacao; sometimes you'll get change in USD, other times you may receive Netherlands Antillean guilders (NAf or ANG) in return.
